it's the hardest thing i'll ever have to do, to turn around and walk away pretending i don't love you

I believe in my heart that VH1 is one of the greatest inventions of our generation. i don't watch it for the videos though, no who needs those...i watch it for the amazing line-up of guilty pleasure shows that they constantly push into my life. i've tried to stay away, but then a marathon run of the seasons episodes appears on some lazy saturday of mine and i am drawn in. happens everytime. now vh1 has an abundance of reality themed guity pleasure shows such as surreal life (what season are they on now?), hogan knows best, and flavor of love. all good ones, but not the ones that have sucked me in. the following are five of the best (and by best i mean, i should be embarrassed that i watch them, but i'm not) shows that VH1 has to offer.

TOP 5 REALITY SHOWS ON VH1:

1. I LOVE NEW YORK: not currently on air, but gearing up for it's second season soon, this show is a train wreck that you can't look away from. i didn't watch it at all, except for clips shown for mocking purposes on "the soup", but then watched the whole season in one day during a marathon. the people on this show ranged from a man who had a weird relationship with his dog, to "white-boy", to new york herself that moaned (and i mean that awkward, am i watching a really bad porno moan) anytime someone touched her...everything about this show is fantastically gross yet compelling tv.

2. SCOTT BAIO IS 45 AND SINGLE: maybe it's my love for charles in charge that drew me to this show, i mean scott baio is still kind of looker. maybe it's the fact that i feel a certain connection to him and his woes about married life...who knows. whatever the draw is, it got me hooked and now i can't leave scott until i know he's going to be okay. i feel for him. can you imagine living like 20 years of your life in a world where anything you wanted was yours? and now he's older, less famous, and struggles with committment.....go figure. scott just needs to let go of his coat-tail riding friend johnny, and find some happiness, but until that happens i will be watching every painfully awkward moment he goes through.

3. ROCK OF LOVE: brett michaels, one of the dreamiest lead singers to come out of the 80's hair band era, and even he can't figure out relationships. i am appalled and yet fascinated by his atrocious animal print coats that he wears every elimination, and can't figure out if he constantly wears hats because he's balding, but my biggest fascination lands with the contestants themselves. what wacko's. i mean i guess the world of groupies has never been known for their class, self-dignity, and moral compasses but these girls are a real piece of work. my favorite girl (if i had to chose) by far, completely based on looks is jes. i think she is so adorable, and my jealousy over her funky pink hair grows each week...she may be just as trashy as the rest of them, but her hair alone wins her some cool points.

4. MISSION MAN:BAND: It's my love of anything to do with boy bands that has me stuck to this show after only one episode. chris (nsync) is a recovering alcoholic, rich (lfo) almost died from leukemia, jeff (98degrees) has chosen the behind the scenes of the business instead, and bryan (color me badd) is a recovering alcoholic, married with kids, who works at what seems to be a tire warehouse. all have taken a major fall from success, and feel like this chance is their last chance to make it in a business that they love. it's heartbreaking and compelling. plus chris hasn't lost that sense of humor that made him my favorite nsync'er back in the day (that fact plus, kim had already "claimed" justin).

5. THE PICK-UP ARTIST: they call him "mystery", the man that is to transform these awkward single men into social pimps. apparently this guy is known for his success all over the world, and i am hoping that maybe i can take his lessons and use them as a woman too....it could work right? these contestants range from a 45 year old virgin to a blonde haired cutie named joe who gets mistaken for a gay guy all the time. it's compelling television.

I can't help but laugh...and feel a little embarassed...that I have seen every single episode aired so far of the 5 shows you listed. Thats no surprise though, really. I don't even know what to say I totally agree with all of your summaries. I too think Jess is the prettiest (although that might not be saying much). Do you remember on I love New York when her and white boy were on the ferris wheel and New York was eating a veggie tray and she had a glass of ranch. I loved white boy and him saying something like "youre really going wild on that cucumber" Or something I don't remember what he said I just remember thinking it was one of the funniest moments on the show. "I like mine with bacon, extra mayo!"

Angie,
Your blog is so awesome! I used to read the "pop candy" blog that Whitney Matheson writes for USA Today: http://blogs.usatoday.com/popcandy/

Yours is way better! We'd all like to think we are into the original music and cutting edge TV that Whitney writes about, but seriously, I'm way more aware of who's left standing on each of the reality TV shows. VH1 is so addictingly trashy, and I'm partial to everything on Bravo - top chef, project runway, top design - we even watched some of that terrible "Shear Genius"...
