You got to live and learn. you got to live and learn.

My little Q started preschool.
She was and is so excited about it. She loves to play with kids, and considers them all her
"friends". I think the social part of school may be her favorite part (like someone else I know), but she is enjoying learning as well...and is super excited to show me all her drawings when I pick her up.
I'm not gonna lie, I like the break as well. It's amazing how much work or errands I can get done in those few hours, leaving me more time to hang out when she is home.
She has her first field trip this week. We are going to the Fire Station a few blocks down from her school, and I can't wait. She is going to love it. And I am so excited that I am able to go with her. Oh the joys of parenthood.
Along with the academics she is also learning dance and singing, and will have performances throughout the year and a recital at the end of the year. I can't even contain my excitement for this, and totally know that I will be crying like a baby during her first performance.

sidenote: Since we are talking about school, I thought I would get some advice from you all. Q is having a hard time learning and remembering her letters. I try to go through them each day with her. Pointing them out, going through the sounds, etc. We read books every day, and I try to point out words and letters in everything we do. But she just isn't quite getting it.
Is this something I should be worried about?
Is there tricks that I should know?

I know that last year I was worried about her not knowing her colors, and now she is a pro, so I don't know if this is the same thing.
Her vocabulary and conversational skills are outstanding, and she isn't short on words...

so advice?

Ang I wouldn't worry about it at all. I know whenever I read blogs I'm like, "dang, are my kids suppose to be able to do these things?!!" but she is pretty young. Kate and Owen are 4 and they are finally mastering their letters and understanding their sounds. But I mean, just barely. And i don't feel like they are slow. haha. So I wouldn't worry about it at all. She's really young.

And I wish my kids preschool did singing and dancing performances! Sounds like so much fun!

Adorable photo!

One day her letters will just click, I wouldn't worry about it at all. She is young and with a September birthday will have an extra year to wait for school. With going to preschool, she will pick it up. Plus sometimes, I think they have it and then it seems they don't. Or more like don't want to cooperate, ha!!

Yeah, she's completely fine. She is only 3, so she has THREE years until Kindergarten. Half the kids in Kindergarten don't know all their letters and sounds. Anyone who has been around Q knows that she is a very bright little girl. And I agree with Melanie--it seems like if they know you want them to do it, the more they leave you hanging and don't cooperate! :)

thanks ladies!! I guess I'll hold off my plan of pushing Q more into the "arts" for a little while longer. hahaha.

I am totally with Lindsay! Don't worry one second. ESPECIALLY if she has no trouble with vocabulary and conversing. She is still really young and she probably won't master that stuff till she's closer to 5-ish (which is normal) She has plenty of time to learn and figure it out...and once she does...they do it all over in kindergarten. Seriously. You are doing a great job. One day it's going to click and she is going to amaze you. :)

Totally agree with all that was said, but one thing that my kids love are the Leapfrog videos. Scarlet learned almost all of the sounds from those shows. They are on netflix and at our library.

I wish we had a preschool/dance combo. That sounds so fun!

I have a bunch of leapfrog dvd's you can borrow. I didn't think about that. Yes, elsie loved those!

If you want some "expert" (as though us parents are the real experts!) encouragement on the letters thing, check out the book "Reading Magic" - it talks about the natural process of learning to read and the way kids will naturally seek out learning their letters when they're ready.

Agree with all of the above. One day she will surprise you and know all her letters, numbers, stuff like that. Sounds like she's already doing great!

I've had trouble posting comments lately. I've wanted to tell you how I nearly fell out of my chair laughing about the binkie monster. And about how adorable Q looks on her first day of preschool. And how I also volley between the panic of raising a daughter who could care less about the academia of life, and loving it because she is still so happy to just be a kid. I figure it's all going to happen in good time. You are such a good momma. miss you.

What a big girl! You are such a proud mama, I love it! Don't worry about the letters AT ALL. She is SO little still. I have kids in my class who are going into Kindergarten next year who are still having a hard time with the letters. Don't worry. Just keep reading!

Don't worry about it at all! My kids go into KINDERGARTEN not knowing their letters/sounds! (I am a lazy parent and don't take the time to teach them, plus I don't put my kids in preschool because again, I am lazy...) BUT they catch up super quick and do GREAT in school! :)

Everyone has said it all, so I will add my "amen". I have lots of kids, and they all get it eventually. I remember Ashley swearing that Oli was color blind because he didn't learn them for the longest time! Looking back, I am halfway convinced he was just messing with her because she was trying so hard to teach him. Q is so smart! All in good time....
